Exhibit D — The seam

WRITTEN DOSSIER · SAME SOURCE · NO VIDEO THIS WEEK
No video this week. There's nothing to film that isn't already on the tape you already have. This is a dossier. Read it the way you'd read an autopsy — slowly, and once.
Last week I said something I need to correct.
"Nobody in it was ever distinguished from anyone else. Six names, one outcome, no follow-up." That's what the record says. The record is wrong, and it's been wrong for two years, because nobody watched the first minute of their own evidence closely enough to see what it actually is.
0:03 – 1:07
Everyone in this family has seen this clip. Most of them stopped watching after the first time, because it's hard to watch, and because the story they were told was that this was the message — Courtnie, spared, delivering somebody else's ransom note on somebody else's behalf.
That is not what this is.
Listen to what she actually says. "The power's out and I can't get ahold of anybody." "I don't know if I'll be able to get this message out." "I think you need to run before he gets you." That is not a hostage reading a script. That is a person who thinks she has seconds, trying to warn someone else before something reaches her.
It reaches her at 1:07.
1:07 – 1:09
Watch 1:07 at quarter speed. She stops talking to the camera and looks at something beside it. Then the picture lurches. That isn't a cut. It's a grab. Whatever took hold of that camera did it while it was still recording her.
Then static — about a second and a half of it. That's the seam. The only one on the tape between her and everything that comes after it.
Now look at the corners on either side of the seam. Same REC marker. Same battery icon. Same little tape icon, same position, same size. Same camera. Whoever shot what comes next shot it on hers.
She said it herself, earlier in the same clip, and nobody believed she meant it about herself: "he got them... he got them all."
He did. He got her too. The tape just shows it from her side first.

I want to be careful about what this does and doesn't mean. It doesn't mean she was complicit. It doesn't mean she was warned in advance, or spared, or working with anyone. Being caught before you finish your own warning is not the same as being the reason the warning was needed. Whatever this family has treated her as for two years — lucky, exempted, the one who got away — she wasn't any of it. She was first. That's the entire difference.
The public record — six names, one outcome — was never a cover-up. Nobody lied. Nobody looked. Looking took two years and a stranger.
2:00 – 2:06 · AZ COOKIE CAM
One more thing while the tape's open. The demand I read you last week asks for an item belonging to each of four children. Four. Not six.
Rachel and John are both in this footage — hooded or held, both frightened, both, as far as I can tell, entirely uninvolved in whatever this is actually about. Neither one is named anywhere in the demand. Nobody asked for anything with their name on it.
They weren't the point. They were in the room when the point happened to someone else. I don't think that's an accident, and I don't think "random" is the right word for any of this anymore.
Audio · under the close-up
Last thing. Under Cookie's close-up, right after the seam, there's a track I originally filed as room tone — compressor hum, nothing worth transcribing. I had it cleaned up this week by someone who does this professionally and doesn't know whose case this is. It isn't room tone. It's a voice, off-mic, talking to itself while the camera runs.
Most of it still doesn't resolve. One sentence does.
"...she won't know until my friend inside tells her."
I don't know who that is. I don't know if "friend" is the right word for whatever it means when Cookie uses it. I'm not going to speculate in print. I'm telling you it's there because you should hear it before I do anything else with it.
→ Exhibit F, below.
For the record, Cookie didn't take that camera anywhere. The close-up that follows the seam was shot right there in her room, within a minute or two of the grab. The only thing that changed hands was the camera.
Case File 002, updated. Courtnie's status changes from cleared to unexplained, because "cleared" was never true and "unexplained" is at least honest.
More once the rest of the audio resolves.
